Gigla Tamazashvili: “Large-scale rehabilitation of Zemo Samgori irrigation scheme is part of the ongoing reform in the amelioration sector”
The large-scale project with total cost of EURO 90 million is being implemented in Gardabani and Sagarejo municipalities, which envisages full rehabilitation of Zemo Samgori irrigation scheme. The project covers 19,129.4 ha of agricultural land area and will ensure modernization of irrigation infrastructure.
The significance of Zemo Samgori irrigation scheme rehabilitation project and its expected outcomes were introduced to the representatives of local self-government and population in Gardabani municipality. The presentation was attended by Gigla Tamazashvili-General Director of “Georgian Amelioration” Ltd and the company representatives.
“Large-scale rehabilitation of Zemo Samgori irrigation scheme is part of the ongoing reform in the amelioration sector. Such infrastructural projects significantly improve the quality of irrigation water supply, increase agricultural productivity and facilitate the development of agricultural sector in the region,” - said Gigla Tamazashvili, General Director of “Georgian Amelioration” Ltd.
The project envisages repair of the damaged sections of the upper and lower main canals, lining of earth sections, rehabilitation of secondary and tertiary canals and where necessary, arrangement of quaternary network in the villages. Furthermore, the project includes repair works on Paldo headworks and installation of modern water level and flow measurement devices compatible with the SCADA system.
The project is being implemented with financial support of the European Investment Bank, in cooperation with the French Development Agency (AFD) , Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture and the Ministry of Finance.
