Presentation of pilot project in Gurjaani municipality

Ministry of Agriculture and United Amelioration Systems Company of Georgia have presented pilot project for rehabilitation of the pumping station to the population of the village Bakurtsikhe, Gurjaani municipality, Kakheti region. The pumping station used to serve to pumping irrigation of 360 ha of agricultural land area of the village Bakurtsikhe.  Nowadays, the station is non-operational. According to the program developed by United Amelioration Systems Company the station will ensure supply of irrigation water to 600 ha of agricultural land area of three villages: Bakurtsikhe, Kolagi and Kardenakhi.

Additional technical components that are envisaged in the project will enable the population to further apply drip irrigation systems after re-operation of the station. Drip irrigation system is much more profitable compared to traditional-flooding irrigation system due to minimizing consumption of electric power and irrigation water by 6 times.  Saving of irrigation water is very significant especially for Kakheti region, taking into consideration low rainfall during irrigation season in this region that is respectively reflected on water volume in irrigation schemes. Furthermore, application of drip irrigation system facilitates to the increase of yield.

David Galegashvili –Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Levan Dvali-Director of United Amelioration Systems Company of Georgia and Givi Metreveli-Deputy Governor of Kakheti region attended the presentation and introduced the aforementioned project and advantages of drip irrigation system to the audience.

Total cost of the project amounts to GEL 2 500 000.  In case of support and willingness of the population to apply modern irrigation technologies, such as drip irrigation system, the project will be implemented this year.

Ministry of Agriculture and United Amelioration Systems Company of Georgia have developed two more similar pilot projects to be implemented in Kakheti region.
