Tombs and burial grounds were discovered in Dmanisi Municipality

Today, Minister of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia Mikheil Giorgadze and Minister of Agriculture of Georgia Otar Danelia, visited Dmanisi Municipality in order to inspect the tombs and burial grounds, found near to the villages Gantiadi and Boslebi. By LTD “Georgian Amelioraton” of the Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia, during the land works of the irrigation system rehabilitation, near to the villages Gantiadi and Boslebi burial grounds trace were found. With the support of the Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia, by the archaeological expedition of the National Museum of Georgia, after studying of the object, old dwellings and burial grounds of late antique period and early medieval were discovered.  The most notable are two burial grounds, found in the village Kanchaant, on the left bank of the river Mashavera, where wealthy people at that time were buried. In burial grounds were found a variety of color and shape glass spices, small bronze bells, deer sculptures, pendants, rings, gold pendants and earrings, silver Roman coins, iron weapons and pottery. “In Kvemo Kartli Region amelioration works are actively  in progress -  worth of 22 million GEL project is being implemented. During the working on Dmanisi-Gantiadi section, we faced a pleasant surprise. We financed the expedition, which resulted in discovering the unique patterns - approximately I-IV centuries items. Studying is started and if it will be necessary, the expedition will go on. Also, it is notable, that amelioration works are not interrupted and as a result of the finished project, population of Kvemo Kartli Region after 30 years, got irrigation water and unique cultural discovery. “ – announced Otar Danelia. “During the restoration of the irrigation systems of the Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia, old settlements were found – the oldest burial grounds of I-IV centuries. As a material testifies, on this territory was very developed settlement. Gold and silver items, coins, various kinds of jewelry, weapons and implements, ointments were found. It is certified that the settlement was very rich. New plan of the expedition is being processed and we think that, with the uninjured burial grounds, more materials will be found, which will give us the opportunity of more researching. “ – announced Mikheil Giorgadze.  According to the collected data, it is clear that in Dmanisi Region at that time, lived very developed and socially advanced society, which had strong cultural and economic connections as with Georgian Regions, as well as with Rome and Siria. Discovered archeological materials, supposedly are dated I-IV centuries AD.
