Gigla Tamazashvili-General Director of “Georgian Amelioration”met with the WUO board members in Sagarejo Municipality
Effective distribution of irrigation water is a serious challenge for the Georgian Amelioration Company. In its turn, high quality and abundant harvest and farmers' income significantly depends on proper management of this resource. Establishment, development and effective management of water user organizations (WUOs) is a path that all developed countries have taken and introduced for proper management of irrigation water resources.
Gigla Tamazashvili -GA General Director has discussed the WUO operational issues at the meeting with the newly established WUO board members in Sagarejo Municipality.
The Sagarejo WUO is the first farmers union which in close cooperation with Georgian Amelioration, plans to supply irrigation water to its members and significantly improve amelioration services. The WUO has been established with the World Bank support and on the first stage, the World Bank will contribute to its development as well, which, apart from the technical assistance, will invite international experts to share experience and introduce innovations.
“The goal of the Company is to promote the first farmers’ union; to guide them to proper organizational management, right approaches and irrigation processes that need to be developed further. I hope that for ensuring efficient use of water resources and stable supply and fair distribution of water to the farmers in the right amount at the right time, WUOs will be established not only in Kakheti region, but throughout the country on various irrigation schemes as well,” said Gigla Tamazashvili.
It’d be noted that the first WUO, incorporating 184 local farmers, has been established in the area of G-16 and G-31 distributaries of Kvemo Samgori right main canal and includes the villages of Giorgitsminda, Ninotsminda and Tskarostavi.
