Forum dedicated to World Water Day held at Technical University of Georgia
The forum dedicated to the World Water Day, held at the Technical University of Georgia, was participated by Mameli Kobalia, head of the Water Resources Management, Energy and GNERC Relations Department of "Georgian Amelioration" LTD. Mameli Kobalia spoke about the challenges existing in the amelioration sector, and the importance of rational use of irrigation water.
"Due to the climatic conditions, more and more attention is attached to the efficient use of water resources. In order, to save existing resources, it is necessary to intensively introduce modern technologies in the field, which means both, well-proven drip irrigation systems in the world, as well as new irrigation systems and devices that allow to reduce water consumption"- said Mameli Kobalia.
The head of the department also drew attention to the issue of the importance of the construction and rehabilitation of reservoirs and mentioned that the company, in parallel with the restoration and rehabilitation of existing reservoirs, plans to arrange the Ilto reservoir, which during the vegetative period will ensure a stable water supply to 43,000 ha of agricultural land in the area of the Kvemo Alazani and Zemo Alazni irrigation systems.
It should be noted that, in order, to promote the rational use of water resources and reduce losses, "Georgian Amelioration" LTD actively implements amelioration infrastructural projects, which will improve water supply and reduce water losses in the systems. The development of the amelioration infrastructural system, the correct management of the water metering policy, water supply to the farmer according to the determined plan, and the creation of their right expectations, will help the farmers to plan correctly their production activities in the long term perspective, also to use modern irrigation methods, which are directly connected to the rational use of water resources.
