With the Government and World Bank participation, the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia is launching large-scale, USD 150 MLN worth project (GRAIL)
Within the framework of the "Georgian Resilient Agiculture Irrigation and Land Project” (GRAIL) rehabilitation and modernization of amelioration infrastructure will be carried out; As a result, irrigation and drainage services and agricultural production will be improved in design areas; Irrigated agricultural land area will increase additionally up to 27 thousand hectares; Institutional capacity for irrigation and land management will be enhanced at the national level.
The goal of the project is to completely change and modernize the management of amelioration schemes, meeting modern standards, which in turn will reduce both operational costs and losses of the natural resource. The modern management system envisages introduction of a number of technological and software innovations.
Preparation works required for implementation of the project are on the final stage. Representatives of the World Bank hold intensive meetings with relevant governmental agencies.
According to Tengiz Nasaridze-General Director of “Georgian Amelioration” Ltd, “Georgian Resilient Agriculture Irrigation and Land Project” (GRAIL), which will be launched in the nearest future and last for 6 years, will be another important factor for contribution to the development of sustainable agriculture in Georgia.
