Meeting in Georgian Amelioration
Levan -Davitashvili - Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture and the management of “Georgian Amelioration Ltd” have summarized the results of the implemented amelioration infrastructural projects and discussed future plans.
As Davit Tsitlidze- General Director of “Georgian Amelioration” ltd, mentioned, important and large-scale projects have been implemented for ensuring water supply of farmers.
The ameliorated agricultural land area has increased 3.5 times and, as of present amounts to 200 thousand hectares. Land plots that had been deprived of irrigation services for decades have been irrigated.
As a result, thousands of farmers were allowed to grow more and competitive crops in their areas, which they could not do due to the lack of irrigation water.
In parallel with agricultural development in the country, demand for irrigation water is increasing, therefore, last year, maximum rate of contracted areas for irrigation services was recorded.
At the meeting, the Minister paid special attention to the issue of intensive introduction of modern technologies in the field, which envisages both well-proven drip irrigation systems and new irrigation schemes and equipment that will allow amelioration office to reduce losses, costs and increase service quality.
Rehabilitation-construction of amelioration infrastructure for the company remains a priority in 2022. According to the medium-term action plan, number of transitional and new rehabilitation projects is 55, as a result of which 20,330 hectares of agricultural land area will be irrigated regularly, and the supply of irrigation water will be improved on 22,180 hectares.
It was mentioned at the meeting that the international support that the country receives from a number of donor organizations is crucial in the implementation of amelioration infrastructural projects.
