After a 30-year pause, irrigation system will come into operation in villages, Khikhani and Shaumiani
The Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia Levan Davitashvili, together with the General Director of “Georgian Amelioration” Ltd. Davit Tsitlidze, got acquainted with the rehabilitation and construction works of the irrigation system in the villages of Kvemo Kartli region - Khikhani and Shaumiani.
“Amelioration-irrigation infrastructural works were carried out continuously throughout the year, even in the situation of the Covid-19 pandemic. One of the important projects we have started in Kvemo Kartli region is being completed, which will provide additional water supply to more than 1000 hectares. At this stage, more than 20,000 hectares are irrigated in Kvemo Kartli. From year to year, water supply areas are growing both in Kvemo Kartli and in other regions of Georgia, which provides new opportunities for agricultural development. Modern agriculture, which is directly connected to water supply, will not be able to develop Without agricultural infrastructure, especially in the conditions of climate change. We will continue to develop irrigation and drainage infrastructure, which is our important plan and priority for the next four years, "- said Levan Davitashvili.
Amelioration infrastructure has not been functioning for 3 decades in the villages of Khikhani and Shaumiani. More than 1000 hectares of agricultural land will be irrigated in Marneuli Municipality through the irrigation system restored as a result of the works carried out by the “Georgian Amelioration”.
Within the framework of this project, arrangement of pumping stations, pressure pipelines, water distribution nodes, water collection and other reclamation facilities have been implemented. At present, the Khikhani and Shaumiani irrigation canals are being rehabilitated. The total cost of the project is 3 659 900 GEL.
Improvement works of Amelioration infrastructure in Marneuli Municipality started in the Autumn of 2019 and will be completed this year.
