Progress of irrigation season and the existing challenges were discussed at the meeting held in Kvemo Kartli regional administration
David Tsitlidze-General Director of “Georgian Amelioration” ltd and Shota Rekhviashvili-State Representative of the region talked about the progress of irrigation season and the existing challenges at the meeting held in Kvemo Kartli regional administration.
As it was mentioned at the meeting, the irrigation infrastructure was prepared for the season and the irrigation season is underway according to the schedule. Mainly, water is uninterruptedly supplied to agricultural land plots. However, there are local cases when, as a result of an emergency shutdown, water supply is temporarily restricted, which becomes the subject of an instant response from the Amelioration Office.
In 2020, the company has carried out significant rehabilitation works on amelioration infrastructure in Kvemo Kartli, but it should be noted that the works will continue actively in 2021, which will further increase the number of water supplied areas in the region.
The meeting also discussed the government's anti-crisis plan, which includes a significant package of assistance in agriculture, particularly amelioration:
In order to alleviate the economic damage caused by the spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) in Georgia and to stimulate the economy, by the decision of the Government of Georgia:
• Indebtedness of up to GEL 8,000,000 incurred against “Georgian Amelioratio”n Ltd., which arose before 2020, will be fully written off to 42,000 farmers;
• More than 42 thousand farmers will be exempted from the amelioration service fee in 2020, which means a tax of up to 75 GEL per 1 hectare.
• The assistance is intended for all farmers who use irrigation and drainage services on up to 10 hectares of land.
The meeting was held at Kvemo Kartli Regional Administration by the governors of the municipalities and representatives of the Georgian Amelioration.
