Levan Davitashvili : “Improvement of amelioration systems significantly develops the agricultural sector”
"Georgian Amelioration” LTD of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia has been implementing large-scale rehabilitation works of amelioration infrastructure for decades," - said the Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, Levan Davitashvili, during the report 2019 of the Ministry.
As a result of implemented measures in the last years, the area of irrigated land in the country has been increased from 45 thousand hectares (2012) till 130 (2019), while drained agricultural land - from 14 thousand hectares (2012) till 39 thousand hectares.
According to the Ministry's report 2019, the company has implemented 31 rehabilitation projects of amelioration infrastructure. Within the framework of rehabilitation, irrigation canal of 58 km and the drainage canal of 77 km have been cleaned/improved, 2 head works have been repaired, while within the operation program, canals of 1 860 km have been cleaned and 2700 units of various types of hydraulic structures have been repaired.
In 2019, the rehabilitated pumping stations were put into operation, which provided irrigation water to the villages of Signagi, Gurjaani, Dedoplistskaro and Akhaltsikhe municipalities, where agricultural lands had not been irrigated for 20-30 years.
"The improvement of amelioration systems will significantly develop the agricultural sector, increase the average yield per hectare, which will provide more income and benefits for each farmer and person employed in agriculture," – was mentioned in the summarizing event.
