Tamaz Mgebrishvili presented a report to the Committee on Agrarian Issues

The report about activities carried out by "Georgian Amelioration" LTD in 2023 and information about planned events, was presented by the general director of "Georgian Amelioration" LTD Tamaz Mghebrishvili, at the session of the Agrarian Issues Committee of the Parliament of Georgia. The session was attended by Tengiz Nasaridze, Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia.

The General Director of "Georgian Amelioration" LTD introduced the members of the committee, deputies, and representatives of the local government the current situation of the field - achieved results and challenges. The conversation was about the projects, which the country implements for the rehabilitation and modernization of irrigation and drainage systems, and to create new modern infrastructure.

As Tamaz Mgebrishvili said at the meeting, as a result of the amelioration infrastructural projects and operation measures, carried out in the last 10 years, the irrigated land area in Georgia for today is 207 thousand ha. From which, 163 500 hectares are water provided, and 43 500 hectares are drained. The company operates 15 active reservoirs, 127 large irrigation systems, 32 headworks, 41 drainage systems, and 57 pumping stations with the help of 19 service centers. The company implements many large-scale projects by active cooperation with international and donor organizations.

It was mentioned at the meeting that “Georgian Amelioration” has large-scale plans for 2024 as well. At this stage, works are being carried out on 44 facilities, with a total cost of 98,4 million GEL. Works will start on 4 objects, the cost of which is 10,18 million GEL. As a result, 9,280 ha of plots will be transferred to regular irrigation land areas, and irrigation water supply will be improved to 11,485 ha.

"Agricultural development is impossible without modernized and effective irrigation and drainage systems; That’s why great efforts are made in this regard by the state. The report, presented to the committee, outlined the concrete steps that have been taken, and the progress that is evident in the modernization of the amelioration systems. This process will be actively continued" - said Deputy Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture, Tengiz Nasaridze, at the committee meeting.

After the meeting of the committee, a meeting was held with the local population, where they talked about the existing challenges and ways to solve them. Within the framework of the site meeting of the committee, in the municipality of Marneuli, the participants inspected the on-going rehabilitation works of the Khram Arkhi irrigation system, financed by the state, and got acquainted with the results. The above-mentioned project will improve the irrigation water supply to more than 4000 hectares of agricultural land area in the municipality.
